Prep for next week’s tute

1. Please read the second article in the Unit Reader (i.e. by Mohan et al.)

2. Prepare a two-minute talk about a famous / infamous / fascinating political figure in your country (past or present)

Today’s tute at 4pm

Hi gang,

today we’re going to do the following in the computer lab:

1. Introduction

2. Listening at your own pace to Part 1: Who on earth are we?
We will discuss this listening in the second tutorial today. Think about the following as you listen:
i) what are the main points being made?
ii) How can we understand another culture?
iii) How can we avoid misunderstandings?

3. Select a story from ‘Words in the News’ to listen to at your own pace. If you desire, you can read the transcript at the same time and check difficult vocab.
i) Upon completion of this task, post a brief summary about this story on your blog

4. Listen to one of the programmes in the ‘Pronunciation Tips’ section. I suggest the one that I’ve outlined (see page 1, number 3)

5. Please post links to any useful listening activities on your blog

how’s your aussie slang going?

Hi everyone,

The StudySmarter team offers a workshop on Aussie slang! It’s on this Wednesday at 1pm. Oh, and the pronunciation workshop that Siri is running is on Wednesday too at 2pm.  They’re both in Guild Sem Room 2.

What is ELAC I?

As the name suggests, we’ll be focusing on English Language and academic communication for tertiary study in the unit ELAC I (or HUMA1101). Students will learn how to produce cohesive essays, assignments and presentations; develop ideas through debate and discussion; and interpret complex written and spoken academic texts. We’ll be using this blog to comment on the work that we do in class.
